GMC has unveiled what it is calling “its new supertruck,” the 2022 GMC Hummer EV, an electric-powered off-roader pickup that appears to be General Motors’ answer to the variety of Jeeps and to the forthcoming Ford Bronco.

The electrified Hummer is scheduled to go into production in the fall of 2022.

“The GMC Hummer EV is revolutionary, defying what the industry thinks of as a pickup truck,” Duncan Aldred, vice president of the Buick and GMC brands, was quoted in the news release.

He added that the Edition 1 version of the truck “will make Hummer EV’s  unprecedented capability and zero-emissions a very special proposition for customers.”

Edition 1 vehicles, with a base price of $112,595, will be done in white exteriors with 5-seat “Lunar Horizon” interiors featuring a 13.4-inch infotainment screen and 12.3-inch driver information display.

There a ‘frunk’ up front that can store removable roof panels

But the most striking feature may well be an “Infinity Roof” with removable transparent “Sky Panels” that can be stored in the “frunk” at the front of the vehicle. Edition 1s also will have a power-rear backlight, power tonneau cover for the bed and a MultiPro tailgate.

Edition 1 Hummer EV trucks will feature an Extreme Off-Road Package with 18-inch wheels wearing 35-inch Goodyear Wrangler Territory MT tires, underbody armor, rock sliders, underbody cameras, as well as adaptive air suspension and 4-wheel “CrabWalk” steering with a diagonal-drive mode.

The trucks will have a 3-motor propulsion system with 1,000 horsepower and what GM figures to be 11,500 pound-feet of torque. GMC expects 0-60 mph acceleration to be achieved in 3 seconds. Range is foreseen to exceed 350 miles, GMC added.

The trucks also will offer “Super Cruise,” a hands-free driving mode for 200,000 miles of roads that have been readied for such technology.

If the Edition 1 price comes as a shock (pun intended), GMC added that the base price for the Hummer EV with a 2-motor system will be $79,995, $89.995 for a model with adaptive air ride and CrabWalk, and $99,995 for one with the 3-motor system. Those versions will be available, respectively, in Spring 2024, Spring 2023 and Fall 2022.

“The Hummer EV will be the first full-electric vehicle in GMC’s portfolio and is powered by General Motors new Ultium battery system,” GMC noted.

Batteries will be produced in Lordstown, Ohio, in a joint venture with LG Chem, and the trucks will be assembled in Hamtramck, Michigan.

Bentley has issued a news release celebrating the completion of the first of 15 special Pikes Peak Continental GT by Mulliner cars to commemorate the record-run up the Colorado mountain in 2019.

The cars feature “exclusive Radium by Mulliner paintwork, carbon fiber body kit, Acid Green brake disc calipers, and Pirelli P Zero Color Edition Tyres,” the company said, adding that 35 percent of the vehicles also will wear the optional mountain decal, just like the record-setting race car.

Additional features include Alcantara interior with Radium contrast stitching and accents, carbon fiber trim and speaker covers in a Black Anodized and Radium finish.

It was at the 2019 Pikes Peak Hillclimb that a Bentley Continental GT set a production-car record with driver Rhys Millen reaching the summit in 10 minutes, 18.4 seconds, breaking the former record by 8.4 seconds.

All 15 Pikes Peak-edition cars, powered by 626-horsepower, twin-turbocharged Bentley W12 engines, have been allotted and those deliveries begin in September, Bentley added.

Jeep unveils Gladiator Farout concept

Farout Gladiator

The Rubicon Trail and the off-pavement challenges of the red rocks of Moab serve as substitutes for the mixed-marshal arts octagon as the challenger (Ford and its new Bronco) takes on the champion (Jeep and its Wrangler) for the right to wear the off-road winner’s belt.

To boost its claim as defending — and future — champion, Jeep has unveiled its Gladiator Farout concept vehicle “that leverages the Jeep Gladiator’s class-leading 4×4 payload and fuel-efficient, long-range-capable 3.0-liter EcoDiesel V6 engine,” the automaker claims.

Actually, the concept was to debut back in April at the annual Moab Easter Jeep Safari. Jeep annually unveils several such concept vehicles at the Moab event, which was canceled this year by the coronavirus pandemic.

Although we didn’t get to celebrate in Moab this year with our latest round of concept vehicles, we’re pleased to introduce the Jeep Farout concept today as a vehicle that blends Gladiator EcoDiesel’s fuel efficiency with an area of features fans of overlanding will love,” said Jim Morrison, head of the Jeep brand.

“Building on the popularity of last year’s Gladiator Wayout concept, and as overlanding continues to grow in popularity, this year’s Farout concept is another opportunity to gather feedback from our passionate customer base.”

The Farout’s EcoDiesel V6 engine joins the Gladiator lineup for the 2021 model year, available in the third quarter of 2020. The engine is rated at 260 horsepower and 442 pound-feet of torque. Jeep also said it will be rated at 28 mpg in highway driving.

The powerplant will be available on the Gladiator Sport, Overland and Rubicon models.

Jeep Gladiator Farout Concept

“An encore to last year’s Jeep Wayout concept, the Jeep Farout concept benefits from Gladiator’s class-leading 4×4 payload and the 3.0-liter EcoDiesel V6 engine’s long-range fuel efficiency to go even further off the beaten path,” Jeep said.

“The main feature of this fully functional concept is a neatly contained, customized deployable roof-top tent. The spacious 16-foot-long by 7.5-foot-tall recreational residence opens and retracts in a matter of seconds. Once unpacked, it comfortably sleeps up to four.”

The Farout also has a “warm, inviting wood-lined interior” with “soft” ambient lighting, dark “smoke blue” leather and orange-stitching seat trim and plaid flannel seat inserts. The concept also has a refrigerator and stove, hanging storage racks and built-in seats and table.

Exterior features include a 2-inch lift kit, 37-inch tires, modified steel front bumper with 12,000-pound Warn winch, Fox shocks, front and rear rock rails, and rear tailgate tow hooks.
